Put It On! Bicycle Helmet Day
On Bicycle Helmet Day, the #posifiets team will be stationed at the main entrance of Maastricht UMC+ to motivate and reward cyclists. Everyone who arrives at the hospital wearing a bike helmet will receive a small surprise — as a token of appreciation and an encouragement for safe behavior.
HersenStrijd Fund
This day is part of a larger campaign by the HersenStrijd Fund, which raises awareness year-round about the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet. And it's not without reason: every day, cyclists are admitted to emergency departments with serious head injuries — injuries that are often irreversible.
“When you fall, a helmet protects you. The consequences of serious head trauma are enormous. No one wants to end up in the ICU with brain damage,” says a HersenStrijd spokesperson.
Awareness
Fortunately, awareness is growing. More and more children — and their parents — are wearing helmets. “Recently, a little girl in our village asked her mom why she wasn’t wearing a helmet,” someone from HersenStrijd shared. “She said, ‘Mom, would you rather have a dent in your head or messy hair?’ That says it all.”
The hope is that one day, wearing a helmet will be just as normal as buckling your seatbelt.
“We dream of a large, national campaign, so that Bicycle Helmet Day will eventually no longer be needed. Until then, we’ll keep emphasizing the importance of cycling safely.”
Put it on — and get rewarded!
This year, #posifiets is once again proud to support this valuable initiative. Because in a city like Maastricht, where cycling is such an important part of life, safety should always come first.
Are you coming to MUMC+ by bike on Bicycle Helmet Day? If you're wearing a helmet, the #posifiets team will be there with a small gift — to thank you for setting a good example.
