Safe cycle route

This change creates a safe cycle route between the Wilhelminasingel and Limmel. The route runs completely separate from the road. Later, it will also connect to the new Limmel aan de Maas area development. Residents of the Sint Maartenspoort neighbourhood will keep a cycle route on the other side of the Franciscus Romanusweg. This route runs from south to north, up to the shopping centre. This keeps the area easily accessible. The municipality is adapting the road to better suit a 30 km/h zone. It is also investigating how to make the surrounding area greener and how to make the route more accessible for people who are blind or partially sighted.

Planning 

Work starts in October 2026. The municipality is carrying out the work in several phases. This keeps the area as accessible as possible for residents, businesses and visitors to the city centre.

Phase 1 | from 5 October 2026 

In early October, work begins on constructing and replacing the segregated cycle path on the Meuse side, between the Sint Antoniuslaan and the Griend. During this work, cycle traffic will be diverted. Cars and lorries can continue to use the road as normal.

Phase 2 | November 2026 

In November, work begins on constructing and replacing the segregated cycle path between the Griend and the Noorderbrug, on the Meuse side. During this phase, cyclists will use a temporary route on the carriageway. Part of the carriageway will be closed off for this purpose. During this period, cars and lorries can only travel from the Noorderbrug towards the south. Traffic from the city centre heading towards the Noorderbrug will be diverted via the Wilhelminasingel, Avenue Céramique, Sphinxlunet, Meerssenerweg and Viaductweg.

Phase 3 | resurfacing the carriageway between the Griend and the Noorderbrug 

In this phase, the municipality resurfaces the carriageway between the Griend and the Noorderbrug. This requires the work area to be fully closed for a short period. At present, the municipality expects this closure to take place over a weekend.

Phase 4 | redesign between the Sint Antoniuslaan and the Griend 

Finally, the municipality will resurface the carriageway between the Sint Antoniuslaan and the Griend, among other works. It will also redesign the central reservations, parking spaces and pavements. During this work, the road will remain open to cars and lorries travelling north-south. Traffic from the city centre heading towards the Noorderbrug will be diverted via the Wilhelminasingel, Avenue Céramique, Sphinxlunet, Meerssenerweg and Viaductweg.

Expected completion 

Based on the current planning, all work will be finished in May or June 2027.
