On foot through Maastricht

In Maastricht, there is enough to discover and best way to do this is on foot. Besides the shopping area in the center and Wyck, you can also enjoy hidden gems and history.

Shopping in Maastricht

In Maastricht, you can easily spend a day shopping. Besides the well-known shops in the center, there are many nice boutiques in the beautiful side streets and in the Wyck neighbourhood.

  • Almost all shops and shopping areas are open seven days a week. There are exceptions on shopping evenings, public holidays, or events, so check the opening hours of your favourite shop before you go.

    Regular opening hours are:

    • Monday and Sunday: 12:00–18:00 hours
    • Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday: 10:00–18:00 hours
    • Thursday: 10:00–21:00 hours

  • During shopping evenings until 9:00 PM and on Sundays between 12:00 noon and 6:00 PM, paid parking is available in the same areas as on weekdays.

  • In Maastricht, a visit to one of the markets is an experience in itself. 

    • Market in front of City Hall: weekly market on Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
    • Organic market on ‘de Ruijterij’ street in Wyck: Thursday from 1:00 PM to5:00 PM.
    • Antiques & collectibles and flea market on Boschstraat: Saturday from 10:00 AM to5:00 PM and Sunday from 12:00 noon to 5:00 PM. If other events are scheduled to take place, these will replace the flea market on those dates.

Where are the public toilets in Maastricht?

If you're going to spend a day shopping or soaking up culture in Maastricht, it's good to know where the public toilets are in case you need to. The City of Maastricht offers visitors to the city the opportunity to use a public toilet in various places. In addition to the public toilets, you can also use toilets in a pub/café for a fee or a consumption.

  • Maastricht Central Station

    Vrijthof Q-park

    There are a number of catering establishments that also open their toilets to non-guests:

    Toilets accessible for the disabled

    There are also several toilets in Maastricht that are accessible for the disabled. These include the municipal toilets at Mosae Forum, Centre Céramique and Theater aan het Vrijthof (Vrijthof 47). You can also go to Boekhandel Dominicanen (Dominicanerkerkstraat 1).

  • On weekends, visit during the morning hours. Alternatively, opt for the weekdays. Mondays through Thursdays are less crowded in the city. Wednesday and Friday are market days.
  • Go exploring in side streets that are sure to wow in Wyck, the Jekerkwartier, Stokstraatkwartier or the trendy Sphinxkwartier neighbourhoods.
  • Park on the edge of the city for a fixed daily rate of €12 at a P+W car park near the Frontenpark, Stadspark or P Bonnefanten. This means your vehicle will be parked at a maximum walking distance of 10-15 minutes from the city centre and you will be able to enjoy all the beautiful things that Maastricht has to offer on the way. 

Walking routes in Maastricht

Walking through Maastricht is an experience in itself because of the beautiful history and Maas river that bisects the city. There are many hiking trails to choose from that will lead you through the historic city or even underground into the caves. These walking routes can also be followed as part of a group.
