About public transport in Maastricht

  • Maastricht has excellent rail links. The Dutch railways (NS) operates Intercity trains toward Eindhoven, Utrecht, Amsterdam, while Arriva operates trains toward Sittard, Heerlen, Kerkrade, Aachen, and Roermond. You can also use the train service provided by the National Railway Company of Belgium to travel to Visé and Liège.

  • Various operators provide rail connections from Maastricht's main railway station:

    • Dutch railways (Nederlandse Spoorwegen): Intercity toward Sittard, Roermond, and the north of the Netherlands.
    • Arriva:
      • RS11 Nijmegen - Venray - Venlo – Roermond
      • RS12 Roermond - Sittard - Maastricht Randwyck
      • RS15 Sittard - Heerlen – Kerkrade Centrum
      • RS18 Stopping train Maastricht Randwyck - Valkenburg – Heerlen
      • RE18 Fasttrain Maastricht – Valkenburg – Heerlen - Aachen Hbf. (Duitsland).
      • Night train Maastricht - Sittard - Roermond - Weert- Eindhoven - Den Bosch - Utrecht - Amsterdam - Schiphol Airport.
    • The National Railway Company of Belgium operates a train service to Visé and Liège (Belgium).

  • If you switch from one public transport provider to another, you should check out with your public transport pass (OV-chipkaart) with that public transport provider and check in again with the other public transport provider for the next leg of your journey. If you switch to a foreign public service provider, you will need to have a valid ticket for that part of the trip. 

  • Travelling from the Euregio Meuse-Rhine by train:

    • You can check in with your public transport pass (OV-chipkaart) to board the RE18 train line, which will take you from Maastricht to Aachen in under an hour. The train departs from Maastricht for Aachen once every hour. The same applies when it departs from Aachen to Maastricht.

    Travelling from the Euregio Meuse-Rhine by bus:

    • Travel from Maastricht to Aachen by bus with Arriva's bus 350. You can purchase a ticket in the bus or use your public transport pass (OV-chipkaart) to pay for the trip.
    • Travel from Maastricht to the Belgian towns Hasselt (via Genk or directly), Tongeren, and Eisden with bus company De Lijn. You can purchase a ticket from the driver or in advance at De Lijn-website.
    • Travel from Maastricht to Liège with TEC. You can purchase a ticket from the driver.

    Arriva's ‘Euregioticket’ is a convenient way of travelling by bus or train through the Meuse-Rhine region – and it only costs €23.50 a day. You can purchase the ticket from the bus driver, at the machine at the station, from official Arriva or NS service points, or online in the Arriva webshop. A week or weekend ticket is available. At weekends and on German, Dutch, and Belgian public holidays, the Euregio ticket is valid for up to two adults and three children aged between four and eleven.

  • Maastricht city bus

    You can catch the bus from anywhere in the region to travel quickly and easily to the city centre of Maastricht. View the map for more information. You can pay using your public transport pass (‘OV-chipkaart') or purchase your ticket directly from the driver.

  • P+R Maastricht Noord

    P+R Maastricht Noord is the ideal starting point for your visit to Maastricht. The premises are only two minutes’ drive away from the A2 (exit 52) and A79 (exit 1) motorways. You can park here for free and continue your travels to the centre of Maastricht economically by bus, train, or bicycle (your own or one of the shared bicycles). 

    Low-cost onward travel by bus

    Arriva's bus number 10 to the city centre and back departs every fifteen minutes for only €2,55 per person. Bus 10 runs four times an hour to the city centre, and bus 30 takes you once every half hour to Maastricht's main railway station. Bus line 3 runs via Nazareth, Groene Loper, city centre to Wolder. A group ticket costs €6,40 for three passengers. If you travel more often with P+R Maastricht Noord, then consider taking out a monthly season ticket for €32,05. This grants you unlimited travel seven days a week. 

    You can also choose to buy a train ticket (at the regular fare) at the Arriva ticket machine to travel on the stopping train (two services an hour) from P+R Maastricht Noord to Maastricht's main railway station or Randwyck station.

  • National/International buses 

    • Direct bus to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Passengers with a ticket for an Air France/KLM connecting flight can take the bus to and from Schiphol free of charge. To do so, you can apply for a free boarding pass online or via your travel agent at least 24 hours prior to departure. For more information, please visit www.klm.nl/klmbus.
    • International connections with IC, and Flixbus to various locations in Europe.

  • Yes, with the Gast Vrij OV campaign. Are you staying overnight in Vaals, Gulpen-Wittem or Valkenburg aan de Geul? Then you receive a voucher code through your accommodation. With it, you travel free by bus and train with Arriva outside peak hours, throughout South Limburg. The campaign runs from 13 July through October 2026.

  • As a student, you can receive a travel product if you are enrolled in a full-time program at an mbo, hbo, or university in the Netherlands, even if you're under 18. The process of obtaining the travel product is done through the DUO website.

    Non-Dutch students can also apply for a reimbursement for public transportation. Check the conditions based on your age, program, and nationality on the DUO website.

    Student Mobility Card offer

    International students at Maastricht University, Zuyd Hogeschool, Fontys, and Vista College get 20-40% discount on bus and train travel with Arriva via Student Mobility to obtain your Student Mobility Card.

    Highlights:

    • With the Student Mobility Card you’ll get Off-peak discounts in Limburg: 20% discount on bus journeys and 40 % discount on train journeys during off-peak hours. The Student Mobility Card costs €15.00.
    • 20 % discount on season tickets for specific routes, valid all day including peak hours. Depending on your travel behaviour, these can be added to the card later.
    • An 12-month valid ISIC, official student ID, for a discounted price as a bundle with your Student Mobility Card. ISIC provides student verifications and discounts worldwide. Visit  www.isic.org for all the benefits.
    • Optional subscription (4.50 EUR p.m.): connect your Student Mobility card in the Student Mobility App with a credit or debit card (No BSN, or Dutch bank account needed) so that you will never have insufficient fund standing in your way when you need to catch your train! Subscription fee of 4.50 EUR will be charged monthly and provides you with an additional 15% NS discount in Off-peak hours. To be clear, by your purchase today you do not sign up to the subscription and will get you the local Arriva discount.

  • Maastricht is easily accessible by public transport, so to for business travel. There are various tickets, travelcards and season passes available for professional use.

    Business OV-chipkaart (travelcard)

    Alongside the OV-chipkaart for private use, there’s also a business OV-chipkaart. These can be useful when you or your employees travel frequently by public transport for business purposes. There are four providers that are TLS certified to offer the business OV-chipkaart:
