Sunset: lights on!
The days are getting shorter and it’s getting dark earlier. Make sure you’re visible on your bike! Switch on your lights as soon as the sun sets, cycle safely through Maastricht, and avoid an unnecessary €84 fine. Together we make the city brighter and safer.
Bike lights: what you need to know
- Use a white or yellow light at the front and a red light at the back.
- Keep your lights on from sunset to sunrise, and during the day when visibility is poor, for example in fog or heavy rain.
- Detachable lights are allowed, as long as they are clearly visible and do not flash. You can also attach them to your bag or jacket.
- Cycling without lights could get you an €84 fine. Bike lights are cheaper!
Bike lights for €1 from the vending machine
No lights? Get a set for just €1 from the #posifiets bike light vending machine. You’ll find it at two locations, for two weeks each:
- 19 October – 2 November 2026: UM Sports, Randwyck
- 2 November – 16 November 2026: UM Library, Grote Looiersstraat

Being visible starts with you
Wear something light-coloured or reflective in the dark. Switch on your lights before you set off, rather than waiting until it’s already dark. Remember your lights in the morning, too!
