Park your (moped) bike for free at Maastricht station at the weekend

Good news for anyone travelling by train from Maastricht at the weekend: from Friday 21 August 2026, you’ll be able to park your bike, moped or scooter for free at Maastricht station at the weekend.

Maastricht is the first city in the Netherlands where NS is trialling this scheme. If you check in on a Friday after 12.00, you can park for free until Monday at 12.00. The first 24 hours of parking were already free and will remain so.

Safe and secure on the move

Are you heading home for the weekend, visiting friends or going away for a few days? Then you don’t need to leave your bike, moped or scooter outside the station. Bikes can be parked in the secure underground NS cycle park. Mopeds and scooters can be parked in the secure NS moped park on Stationsplein.

This way, your vehicle will be safe and dry, and you’ll be helping to keep the station area tidy, organised and accessible.

For everyone

The scheme starts just before the induction weeks and the new academic year. This makes ‘Weekend Free Parking’ particularly appealing to students who go home at the weekend, but the scheme is explicitly intended for everyone.

No registration or booking is required. You simply check your bike, moped or scooter in and out as usual. The system automatically calculates whether your parking period falls within the free weekend hours.

Maastricht: the first city

Through this pilot scheme, Maastricht City Council and NS are investigating whether free weekend parking will encourage more people to use the secure cycle parks and result in fewer bicycles, mopeds and scooters being parked on the streets.

The pilot will run for one year. During this period, the use of the cycle parks and parking behaviour around the station will be monitored. In the first few weeks, the focus will be on providing information and encouraging participation. The #posifiets promotional team will therefore be regularly present around the station to inform travellers about the new scheme. From October, the enforcement team will also be involved.

  • The free weekend scheme runs from 12.00 on Friday until 12.00 on Monday. If you check in after 12.00 on Friday and collect your bike, moped or scooter by 12.00 on Monday at the latest, you won’t have to pay anything.

  • Yes. You check your bike, moped or scooter in and out as usual when you arrive and leave. You can do this using a public transport chip card, a debit card or a public transport pass. The system automatically calculates whether your parking period falls within the free hours.

  • When you check out, the system automatically calculates whether you have taken advantage of the free weekend scheme. If your entire parking period falls between 12.00 on Friday and 12.00 on Monday, you will not be charged.

  • Yes. The first 24 hours of parking are always free, even outside the weekend.

    For example, if you check in at 2.00 pm on a Sunday, you can leave your bike there for free until 2.00 pm on Monday, as the standard first 24 hours are free.

  • If you check in before 12.00 on Friday, your parking period will not be covered by the Free Weekend Parking scheme. The standard rules apply: the first 24 hours are free, after which you pay the standard rate. Would you like to take advantage of Free Weekend Parking? Then please check in after 12.00 on Friday.

  • From 12.00 on Monday, the ‘Free Weekend Parking’ offer will end and the standard terms and rates will apply again. If, at that point, you are still entitled to part of the standard first 24 hours’ free parking (for example, if you checked in on Sunday afternoon), this will of course still apply.

  • The first 24 hours’ parking are free. After that, the standard daily rate applies. The rate depends on the type of vehicle and where you park. Before you set off, check the current rates at the car park entrance or on the NS website.

  • No. You don’t need to register or make a booking. Simply check your vehicle in and out as usual (using your public transport card, debit card or digital payment method).

  • Maastricht City Council and NS want to make it more appealing to use the secure cycle parking facilities. This will mean fewer bicycles on the streets and ensure that the area around the station remains uncluttered, safe and accessible. This is a one-year pilot scheme to assess the impact.

  • The pilot will run for one year, from 21 August 2026 to 20 August 2027 inclusive. During this period, Maastricht City Council and NS will monitor the use of the cycle racks and cycling parking behaviour around the station. A decision will then be made as to whether the scheme will be continued.

  • Please park your bicycle, moped or scooter only in places where this is permitted, such as in the designated cycle racks, bays and zones. Bicycles, mopeds and scooters left outside the racks or in unauthorised places may obstruct the passageway. From October, there will be increased checks for this around the station, including at weekends.
