Safe and Smart Cycling: Students Receive Tips in Maastricht

Throughout the year, we attend various events and busy locations in the city to engage with cyclists. For example, every year we participate in the Helmet Campaign (on Bicycle Helmet Day) in collaboration with MUMC+, and last year we were present at the bicycle parking facility of the Radius Festival. There, we surprised cyclists with fun bicycle gadgets, such as lights, so that everyone could cycle home safely after the festival.

In addition, we are always present at the start of the academic year for new students, both in February and September. During the introduction weeks, we help new (Master's and Exchange) students find their way around Maastricht's cycling culture. We give tips on cycling more often, cycling safely and secure parking, and we do this together with our partners such as Verkeersveiligheidsgroep Maastricht (Maastricht Road Safety Group) and Samen Onbeperkt (Together Without Limits).

We are also present on the busiest bicycle collection days at Swapfiets, also known as Top Days, precisely when students collect their new bicycles. This ensures they receive all the important information they need for a safe and enjoyable start to cycling in the city.

Introduction weeks

Are you coming to INKOM between 17 and 20 August? Then you will get to know Maastricht and everything that goes with it. This includes cycling safely and parking your bicycle safely. Because bicycles parked haphazardly cause irritation to other residents and sometimes even lead to genuinely unsafe situations.

The #posifiets team will be at the “Welcome to Maastricht market” at Tapijn on the first day of INKOM (17 August)

  • Take part in the Obstacle Run and experience what it is like to walk with a wheelchair or white cane over a replica pavement littered with haphazardly parked bicycles.
  • Choose the VR Experience and see what it's like when pedestrians, cyclists and cars almost “collide”. You'll get tips on how to park safely and avoid fine
  • Or talk to representatives of the Samen Onbeperkt Foundation.

From August to October, the various faculties of Maastricht University and Zuyd University of Applied Sciences hold their introduction weeks. During these activities, we will be happy to provide you with more information about what you should and should not do when cycling and parking your bicycle in Maastricht. This will help you avoid unnecessary fines and allow you to spend your money on a fun festival or a pleasant afternoon on a terrace. We will also be handing out fun and useful #posifiets gadgets, such as saddle covers, key rings and bicycle lights.

#posifiets-team

Together, we are putting our weight behind the #posifiets behaviour campaign. With a team of promotional staff and partners such as Fietshandhaving, Samen Onbeperkt, the Fietsersbond, the Maastricht Road Safety Group (VVGM) and the Maastricht police, we are working to ensure that the city remains accessible and safe for everyone. By approaching cyclists in a positive manner, informing them about smart and safe parking, and reminding them of the most important cycling rules, we are working together to promote pleasant and responsible cycling behaviour in the city.

Collaboration with landlords and housing associations

Together with landlords and housing associations from our partner network, we look for smart and practical solutions for bicycle parking. We always consider what suits the location and type of property. In this way, we work together to find solutions that really work in practice.

A good example is Sporenstraat. Here, the door of the indoor bicycle parking facility of a student residence has been fitted with a special #posifiets sticker. This sticker encourages residents to use and park their bicycles in a positive way.

We also provide a free toolkit with ready-to-use materials. We are also happy to offer our informative Welcome to Maastricht flyer – with all the dos and don'ts of cycling in Maastricht – for welcome packs or goodie bags for new students, for example.

Are you a landlord dealing with a bicycle parking problem? We are happy to help you find a solution. Feel free to contact us!
