Approach to #posifiets scrutinised by UM
With #posifiets, the Maastricht municipality and Maastricht Bereikbaar are focusing on cycling more often, safe cycling and especially safe parking. They do this together with residents, students, entrepreneurs, educational institutions and housing corporations. Four students from University College Maastricht have now put the #posifiets approach under the microscope.
Stall safe
Bicycles belong to the Netherlands and to a student city like Maastricht. Not everything has to be “fancy”. At the same time, incorrectly parked bicycles cause a nuisance and unsafe situations. Free passage on the pavement is important. For everyone, but especially for people with prams and people with physical disabilities.
About the research
Four students from University College Maastricht particularly delved into the #posifiets approach to safe parking. They investigated where further opportunities lie to encourage the desired, safe behaviour. They analysed current information material and conducted a survey. They also devised their own measures to help cyclists on the street to modify their behaviour.
The result
As it turned out, even with small adjustments, you can positively encourage cyclists to park their two-wheelers safely. Such as posters with one message aimed at one target group or highly visible markings on the pavement.
Another important outcome of the analysis is that customisation pays off: what works in one place or with one target group does not necessarily have to be equally successful everywhere. So there are plenty of opportunities for targeted information and street campaigns tailored to specific locations and target groups.
Remarkable
The students' analysis also had positive points such as the wide network of inner city partners. What stood out was the use of very different means such as leaflets, social media and the physical Obstacle Run. Also mentioned was the VR glasses, which allow people to virtually see what it is like when cars, cyclists and pedestrians “collide” in the street or on the pavement. In addition, many experience stories were shared from different perspectives. From students to wheelchair users. Finally, the positive and inclusive approach was mentioned. #Posifiets engages residents, students, disabled people, room renters and drivers.
And now?
The results provide a great basis to further strengthen the approach. With even more room for creativity, stories of experience and involvement of the city's direct stakeholders. The #posifiets approach is based on the municipal action plans Bicycle and Bicycle Parking in Maastricht 2020 - 2025. It will then be up to the municipal council to follow up on the action plans.
