How do you use the Groene Loper, Corné?

“Now the Groene Loper is being used as intended”

17 July 2025

The Groene Loper is not only a traffic connection, but also a special place in Maastricht where urban nature, relaxation, and exercise come together. We are curious to know how people use the Groene Loper. This time, we asked Corné Rutten (27), who has been following all the work from the very beginning, an avid user of and resident on the Groene Loper.

My first encounter

In 2009, during a test he didn't feel like taking at Sint Maartenscollege, he stared at the construction site that had become the A2. It wasn't immediately the inspiration to study urban planning later on, but Corné has come to appreciate the Groene Loper even more through his studies. “Because I experienced those developments up close, I have quite unique knowledge. I therefore find it incredibly interesting to now be a member of the Think Tank. This was set up so that people can contribute ideas about communication regarding the new measures.”

My choices

Now that he sees the resources being deployed, he is very satisfied. “It ensures that the Groene Loper will be used as it was originally intended,” says Corné. “The survey conducted among users a while ago made me realize how scary it can be for older people when cyclists slalom past them. The traffic measures ensure that everyone can continue to use the Groene Loper.” So stroll calmly on the central path and pick up speed on the roadway. “For example, I choose the middle path for running and the roadway for cycling from the Torenflat to my work in Beatrixhaven.”

What strikes me

“The Groene Loper is successful, that's clear. Different people use it at different times. In the morning, during rush hour, you see commuters, older people go for a walk in the afternoon, and you see runners throughout the day.” But Corné also sees that it is now becoming a bit too busy. “We discussed this with the Think Tank, and I'm pleased to see that the municipality has done a lot with our input.”

My tip

If Corné could give one tip, it would be to “enjoy the Groene Loper.” “Take a leisurely stroll along the central path, roughly from restobar MAMA's to Geusseltpark. Then you'll really see how a new part of Maastricht has been created here.” He adds: “And take a good look around you. Look at and read the various messages you see here. And let them guide you. Okay, maybe that's two tips,” he concludes with a laugh.

My favorite moment

“Every moment I walk or cycle along the Groene Loper, the sun is shining, I look around me and see that other people are also enjoying the Groene Loper.” Corné remembers what a contrast this is compared to when the highway was still above ground. “You could almost say that the Groene Loper has grown with me and vice versa. That gives me an extra connection to this place!”
