A2 tunnel | Night-time closure August
Additional tunnel maintenance of the Koning Willem-Alexander tunnel
A2 tunnel: August 20, 9.00 p.m. – August 21, 6.00 a.m.
The A2 tunnel is closed in both directions. This is an additional night-time closure. Traffic can continue via the N2 tunnel tubes.
Why is the A2 tunnel being closed additionally?
Rijkswaterstaat recently established that the way in which some panels are connected to the underlying surface differs from what is normally observed. To determine the cause and any possible consequences, specialists will carry out additional investigations during this night. If necessary and possible, repairs will be carried out immediately.
Not related to the earlier investigation
This investigation is separate from the investigation into the fire resistance of the tunnel that started several years ago. That investigation focused on the possibility of concrete spalling at very high temperatures.
Based on the results, Rijkswaterstaat took additional measures at the time to temporarily safeguard the safety of road users and emergency services. In the meantime, it has also become clear how the tunnel can once again structurally comply with the statutory requirement of 60 minutes of fire resistance.
