14-17 nov: A2 motorway in Midden-Limburg closed

From Friday 14 November 9 PM until 17 November 5 AM, the A2 motorway will be completely closed between Het Vonderen and Kerensheide. This will cause traffic jams and a great deal of delays on (local) roads. Take into account that delays may exceed 60 minutes. These closures are necessary for widening the motorway.

What will you notice during the weekend closure?

    • The A2 between junction St. Joost (44) / A73 Maasbracht (22) and junction Urmond (48) will be closed from Friday 14 November, 21:00 until Monday 17 November, 05:00.
      The on- and off-ramps of the intermediate junctions will close one hour earlier and reopen one hour later.
    • The southern on- and off-ramp at Urmond (48) will remain open. This means that traffic from Urmond towards Maastricht is possible, and vehicles coming from Maastricht can exit the A2 at Urmond.
    • At Knooppunt Kerensheide, several connecting ramps will be closed from Friday 14 November, 22:00 until Monday 17 November, 02:00. This measure is necessary to ensure smooth traffic flow during the daytime.

    Additional closures:

    To manage traffic on local roads safely, the following roads will also be closed:

    • Sint Joosterweg (Maasgouw) near Ei van St. Joost in the direction of Maasbracht:
      closed from Friday 14 November, 23:30 until Sunday 16 November, 21:00.
    • A2 on-ramp Grathem (41b) towards Maastricht:
      closed from Friday 14 November, 23:00 until Sunday 16 November, 22:00.
    • A73 on-ramp Roermond-Oost (20d) towards Maastricht:
      closed from Friday 14 November, 23:00 until Sunday 16 November, 22:00.
    • Oude Lakerweg (Echt-Susteren) near the De Loop West industrial area will serve as an emergency route for emergency services.
      Therefore, Oude Lakerweg will be closed to other road users from Friday 14 November, 19:00 until Monday 17 November, 06:00.
    • Hoogveldlaan (Sittard-Geleen) near the N276, towards the Hoogveld district:
      closed from Friday 14 November, 23:30 until Sunday 16 November, 21:00.

    Attention: 

    In case of poor weather, the work cannot take place. The backup weekend is week 47, from Friday 21 November 9 PM to Monday 24 November 5 AM.

  • Rijkswaterstaat will be carrying out additional work between St. Joost and Echt (direction Maastricht) from Friday 28 November, 21:00 until Sunday 30 November, 13:00.
    The backup weekend for this work is week 49.

We understand that this is inconvenient. By taking a break from the car during the A2 WeekendBreak, you can take control of your own weekend. You’ll help prevent traffic jams, keep the road clear for emergency services, and contribute to a faster and safer widening of the A2.

Tips to avoid inconvenience:

  • If you work during the weekend, work from home where possible, or otherwise take the bicycle, train, or carpool with colleagues.
  • Do your shopping before the weekend, or use your bicycle for short trips.
  • If you play sports during the weekend, cycle to your training or match, travel together, or plan for extra travel time. Avoid being late and missing the game.
  • Planning a day out? Take the train, plan your trip during the week, or make your weekend away a bit longer by leaving on Friday and returning on Monday.
  • Staying home for the weekend can also be enjoyable. Stay close to home and enjoy a walk or bike ride in your area, or make it a cosy weekend with household projects, games, or a film night.

You can travel with 50% discount if your train journey passes through the closed area and starts or ends in one of the following locations:
all NS and Arriva stations from and including Roermond heading south, such as Echt, Sittard, Geleen-Lutterade, Maastricht, Heerlen, and Valkenburg.

How to travel by car?

Do you still need to drive? Please allow for extra travel time — up to 60 minutes on local roads and 15 to 45 minutes on long-distance detours. The traffic congestion will not be limited to Dutch roads, but will also be noticeable on the diversion routes in Belgium and Germany.

    • Via Belgium:
      Traffic will be diverted via the E314 and/or E313 towards Antwerp, and then:
      • towards Eindhoven via Houthalen and the N74, or
      • towards Breda via the E19 from Antwerp.
        The route depends on your direction of travel.
    • Via Germany:
      An alternative route runs via the A44 and A61 towards Venlo.

  • Follow the detours via the N294 and N297, or travel via the N75/N78 through Belgium (Genk, Maasmechelen and Maaseik).
    Another option is the route via the N300, N274 and Germany (Selfkant) towards Roermond/Venlo/Nijmegen.

Please adjust your plans so that Rijkswaterstaat can widen the A2.

  • During the works, you can stay informed about upcoming closures and diversions within the project area via the A2VK WhatsApp channel.
    Through this channel, we will also communicate if a weekend closure does not take place.
