Zero Emission City logistics Maastricht
Keeping Maastricht livable and economically vital
As of January 1, 2025, Maastricht will implement Zero Emission City Logistics (ZES). The inner city will then no longer be accessible to delivery vans and trucks that emit CO2. This is good for the climate and our health. At the same time, it also has consequences for your business. For example, if you are an entrepreneur in the city center or if you supply companies in the city center or are a service provider who needs to be in the center. So take steps in time so that you can continue to do good business after 2025! Together we will ensure that Maastricht remains a city where it is good to live, work, do business and enjoy recreation.
In the Climate Agreement, the government has agreed with companies, organizations and municipalities to work on attractive city centers with clean air, more greenery and space. ZES makes an important contribution to maintaining a healthy, attractive and safer city center and therefore also to economic vitality.
Cleaner transportation for economic vitality
ZES means the introduction of a ZE zone from 1-1-2025 for all delivery and freight traffic, i.e. vehicles with CO2 emissions are no longer welcome, only vehicles that are battery-electric, hybrid (provided they drive demonstrably without emissions in the zone) or run on hydrogen. Above all, ZES is also a more efficient and sustainable approach to logistics flows that leads to fewer kilometers driven. This can be achieved through smart logistics and more efficient operations: use of smart logistics platforms, bundled ordering and delivery and bundled waste collection, white label waste collection; transshipment facilities at the edge of the city (hubs) and delivery via e-(cargo)bikes; and the use of shared cars by city center entrepreneurs and logistics entrepreneurs. Subsidies are also available for this. Ultimately, smart logistics can also generate profits for the entrepreneur.
Clean air, better accessibility and safer downtown
ZES ultimately leads to an inner city where it is even better to live and do business. ZES provides clean air, better accessibility and safety in the city center and ultimately also contributes substantially to reducing CO2 emissions (1.7% of the national total). A cost and benefit analysis shows a social profit of € 25 million after deduction of the necessary investments.
Maastricht is the first city in Limburg to opt for ZES, the national number will be 27 by 2022.
