  3. Stricter control in Wyck
15 August 2023

Stricter control in Wyck

Safe bicycle parking and consideration for one another will receive extra attention in Wyck, especially in Alexander Battalaan, Bourgognestraat and Sint Maartenslaan. From 1 August, the Maastricht municipality will start extra enforcement.

Unfortunately, many bikes are haphazardly parked on the pavement in the aforementioned streets. Bikes outside the racks, are in the way especially for people with wheelchairs, blind canes, rollators or prams. They are sometimes forced to swerve to the road where cars and buses drive. Besides these dangerous situations, many residents also want an attractive street where bicycles are neatly parked.

Cost

From 1 August, it will be forbidden to park bicycles and scooters outside the bike racks in Alexander Battalaan, Bourgognestraat and Sint Maartenslaan. In these streets, Maastricht local authorities will carry out more frequent and stricter checks. Has your bicycle been removed? Then it costs 25 euros to collect your bicycle from the bicycle depot on Gerardusweg 39.

Indoor bicycle parking

Can you park your bike inside where you live? Gladly! Neighbours appreciate the extra effort you make. No indoor parking? Visiting? Stall in a bike compartment or storage area.

Nearby, you can use:

  • The bicycle parking on Alexander Battalaan (free of charge)
  • The underground parking at the station. The first 24 hours are free. An annual subscription costs €80. There is space for 3,000 bicycles. The parking is open 15 minutes before the first train until 15 minutes after the last train.
  • The bicycle parking behind the station on Meerssenerweg has space for 600 bikes, is free and open 24/7.

Thank you for being considerate of others. Together we make sure everyone can use the pavement safely. Keep it #posifiets.

Joint approach

Maastricht promotes more frequent cycling, safe cycling and above all safe parking. The city is increasingly #posifiets. That means cycling in a way that makes you happy and doesn't bother anyone else. Maastricht city council is always working on new cycling facilities, providing active information and enforcing when there's no other way. Certainly not all 'cycling questions' are solved equally quickly, but with small steps and joint responsibility, the approach continues to grow. For #posifiets, the municipality cooperates with Maastricht University, student organisations, NS, entrepreneurs, housing corporations, neighbourhood networks and interest groups, among others.
