Evelien Meijerink on the E-bike

"It takes me ten minutes longer to get to work on my E-bike. That difference keeps me fit"

I had been toying with the idea of buying an E-bike for a while. So when Maastricht Bereikbaar offered a 10% discount on the price and agreed to pay part of the insurance, it was a no-brainer. Well, it is a bit of an investment.

But it’s well worth it. I live in Sittard, quite a distance away, but commuting by car wasn’t exactly quick because I got caught in the rush hour traffic. Now the journey takes ten minutes longer, but that difference helps to keep me fit. I’ve got a busy job and can’t spare the time to drop by the gym. One of the best parts is that I can chill out on the way home. Last year, circumstances intervened and I had to take the car again for a while. I hated it. Now I do a lot more on the bike at home and only use the car for long distances, or if I have to work late in the winter. Another perk is the money you save, but you soon spend that on other things, haha.

I’m a walking advertisement for the E-bike at work. It’s handy, fun, fast, and healthy. For everyone. I seem to have inspired some of my colleagues to do the same. They must have thought: ‘If she can cycle from Sittard, so can I.’

I think this is a fantastic initiative by Maastricht Bereikbaar. Can’t praise it enough. But I have to say that the local authorities – my employer included – could do a lot to improve the cycle paths.
